This may sound intimidating at first, but it really is quite simple. This tutorial includes step by step instructions on how to get it set up.

Requirements:
-WinXP Professional
-Internet connection (preferrably a static connection)
-A client computer with a 32-bit version of Windows running at least IE4.0

Step 1: Setting up IIS
The first step in the process is installing IIS (Internet Information Services) onto the computer you want to connect to. This computer must be running WinXP Pro. Find your XP Pro installation CD.
  • Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  • Click the Add/Remove Windows Component button.
  • Select "Internet Information Services (IIS)".
  • Click the Details button while IIS is highlighted.
  • Select "World Wide Web Service" from the Window that appears.
  • Click the Details button while WWW Service is highlighed.
  • Put a check next to "Remote Desktop Web Connection"
  • Click OK to close that Window and then OK again to close the next window.
  • Click Next in the Windows Component Wizard to begin installing your new features. If you CD is not in the drive you will be prompted to insert it.
  • After the installation completes, click Finish to close the Wizard and then click Close to exit the Add or Remove Programs window. You now have a folder called c:\inetpub\wwwroot\tsweb. The web page we'll use is sitting in that folder.

Important! I strongly recommend that you immediately run Windows Update to download the latest patches for IIS!

    Step 2: Enabling Remote Desktop
  • Start > Control Panel > System
  • Choose the Remote tab. In the Remote Desktop section, check the box that says "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer." By default, all members of the Administrator group are allowed to access the computer remotely. To add other users, choose Select Remote Users and add other users to the list. Be careful who you add to the list though!

Step 3: Testing out this great new feature
  • Find your IP address by clicking Start > Run > cmd and click OK. Type ipconfig and press Enter. Write down your IP address.
  • Go to another computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows and IE4.0 or higher. Open IE and type in this address:http://<yourIP>/tsweb
When the web page appears, type your IP address in the box labeled Server. Click Connect and you should soon see a log-in screen to your computer.

That should be all you need to get going. On my computer, I set the some additional security on the process by restricting the tsweb folder to only allow my log-in access (i.e. remove the Everyone group). Note that you can connect to any computer with Terminal Server or Remote Desktop Server from that web page.

    Good luck and happy remoting!
